Books I've Read Recently

January 04, 2015 in ON THE SHELF

I came across this post by The Nectar Collective about the books she's read recently and loved it! I always bring too many books with me when I travel and I'm not too into kindles so it means I'm carrying around books in my luggage and handbag. Sometimes they are even library books.

1. Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She's "Learned" by Lena Dunham

I'm a fan of Girls so I was pretty excited about Dunham's book, though a little nervous that it might disappoint. I'm glad Dunham stayed the course and wrote in her own style, her own way. The consistency in tone is what most impressed me as well as her ability to weave together little anecdotes into a full narrative. I also loved how much she mirrored those that she admires and gave credit to the trailblazers that came before. Feminism comes in many forms and I'm glad Dunham continues to share her story and her version.

Favorite quote(s) from the book: “Ambition is a funny thing: it creeps in when you least expect it and keeps you moving, even when you think you want to stay put.” ― Lena Dunham

"You can’t meet someone until you've become who you’re becoming."  ― Nora Ephron

2. Dinosaur Feather by S.J. Gazan

I found this book at the library and brought it on my trip to Copenhagen because the author is Danish and it is set in Copenhagen. I loved learning about the city and following the mystery set around PhD students and professors in the Biology department at the University of Copenhagen. A great read if you like mystery, strong characters and Danish culture.

Favorite quote from the book: “As if everything, life and nature, was entirely random and unplanned. The whole business is insane!”

3. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

I also took this on my Nordic adventure and read it in one night in Helsinki over salmon soup and a local brew. It kept me laughing alone at my table, which is kind of the best thing ever. I loved how honest Kaling was about her shenanigans. Her story is super inspiring and gives just enough detail without giving it all away. I also appreciated her consistent tone, self-expression and matter-of-fact silliness. I related a lot to Kaling and see her as a role model in so many ways.

Favorite quote from the book: “...write your own part. It is the only way I've gotten anywhere. It is much harder work, but sometimes you have to take destiny into your own hands. It forces you to think about what your strengths really are, and once you find them, you can showcase them, and no one can stop you.”

4. Bossypants by Tina Fey

I was a tiny bit thrown by this as Fey is obviously a phenomenal woman and writer, but her book wasn't as meaty as I had expected. It was a bit more random and thrown together, but still hilarious and a really quick, easy read, which is sometimes important. She had an interesting perspective on feminism, a little laid back and just do it kind of stance, which I appreciate but find hard to swallow -- she even admits it's hard. Her own struggle that ends the book is extremely depressing. On the other hand, she had quite a few inspiring quotes and walks the talk, despite how conflicted she may be.

Favorite quote from the book: “Do your thing and don't care if they like it.”

5. #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso

I understand why this got bad reviews. But, I still really enjoyed it. Amoruso is not a writer, but she's a great quote-maker and has a lot of punch that she packs into her manifesto. Her dots aren't really connected in a way that will satisfy anyone trying to follow her footsteps, but that is kind of the whole point -- there are no footsteps you can follow when you are creating your own reality. I really resonated with her making magic happen talk, probably the parts that turn people off the most are what I loved best. The first time I went to San Francisco as an adult I remember thinking 'I make magic happen'. And I do. We all do. It's nice to know Amoruso and I share that kind of faith.

Favorite quote(s) from the book:  “You create the world, blink by blink. It is entirely yours to discover and yours to create.”

“Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself. —George Bernard Shaw”

What have you read recently? What are you planning on reading this year?

Memories and Milestones of 2014

December 30, 2014 in STYLE

It's almost the end of 2014. I'm sitting here with Mr. Bailey, my friend's adorable pup, sipping an almond milk cappuccino while I write in my friend's pink apartment in Laguna beach. This kind of sums up my year: comfy, inspiring and wandering in a new place.

This month's Travel Tuesday theme with A Compass Rose is 'favorite travel memories of 2014'. Below are my favorite travel memories and other milestones in my life. It's been an interesting year and I can't wait for 2015! Look out for some new collaborations, travel posts and another etxe collection.

Moving to DC

The first milestone for me is moving to DC. Earlier this year I moved across the country with no job, no house, no nothing. I had been living in San Francisco for 4 years, which was awesome, but wanted a change of scenery and to be closer to my sister. I had been working at Betabrand for a while and learned a ton in fashion design and local clothing production. I needed a fresh start to get back to my creative roots, grow in my own style and get to work. With a lot of cold calls, internet research and good old persistence, I found a job in DC where I could work on my digital marketing skills and a communal sewing studio where I could work on designing my own womenswear pieces. I found a fantastic photographer to work with and convinced my sister to model for our Flor Silvestre collection.

Designing + Photographing Flor Silvestre

I have to admit -- having been at Betabrand for so long, I had crazy expectations for how quickly I could create a mini collection. It took about 10 times longer than I thought. When you are doing everything yourself, it's totally totally different, especially when you are used to working with a huge team, lots of experts and a pretty unlimited budget. I am currently trying to figure out how to pay for the sample fabric for my FW15 collection, so yeah, it's different. But I love it and I'm so proud of the work it took to get our Flor Silvestre done. I loved working with Betsy (photographer) and Val (model) on the shoot -- they were both totally inspiring and committed to the project.

Easter Brunch in Malcolm X Park

The first party my sister and I threw together in DC was an Easter brunch in Malcom X park. We had her friends and my new friends and all drank and ate our homemade brunch goodies. We made cascarones and hid the in the trees. A super fun time and totally validated my decision to move to DC so I could do such things with my sister.

Wandering in Tallinn

I spent some time in Tallinn, Estonia to visit a friend and explore a new place. It was fantastic.

Shopping in Copenhagen

I also got to visit Copenhagen and fell in love. I now wear a lot more black, red lipstick and frequently rock my nikes. I loved the fashion, the food, the museums and the people. I'll be posting more about this trip soon!

Cherry Blossoms in DC

During cherry blossom season I bugged everyone asking is this a cherry blossom? is this a cherry blossom? When we finally went to visit the actual cherry blossoms I finally understood: nothing else compares.

Beach Camping in Assateague

Camping on an island with new friends and wild ponies? uh, yeah I did that and it was the best thing ever.

Paddle Boarding in Belmont Shores

My family and I spent a week in July in Belmont Shores paddle boarding, bonfire makin' and sipping wine with a million cousins. The cops came we had such an awesome party.

Family time in Gilbert, AZ

My favorite memory this of this past year just happened -- spending Christmas with my family in Gilbert, AZ where I was born and raised. I miss them all terribly, but am happy I can share so many adventures with my younger sisters, parents, grandparents and cousins.

Happy New Year!

Here's to a fabulous 2014 and an even better 2015 to come! I'll be toasting in the new year in Laguna with some good friends. Hope you do the same!

What were your favorite memories of 2014? Where did you travel to that was unforgettable?

Tallinn, a living fairy tale

December 11, 2014

Tallinn is one of those places that few people know about, but the ones that do are totally in love. It’s said to be the ‘start-up capital of Europe’ and is in fact where Skype was created. Obama just made a visit, so now you may have heard of it. I was drawn to Tallinn because my friend is living there at the moment and I figured, why not?
