cake in jar

create: cake in a jar

November 26, 2014 in TRAVEL, IN THE STUDIO

I'm pretty into packages (sending them, receiving them :), buying local and making special things for people I care about, so naturally I'm in love with a project a friend is starting called The Whiff Co.

The Whiff Co. makes it easy to send handmade love to people you care about. Part of the love is a cake in a jar and creator Wole came over the other day to make some with me for a friend of ours. We used his favorite recipes to make delightful little treats that will be delivered and, hopefully, be an awesome surprise for the recipient.

With the holidays coming up, there are lots of opportunities to give gifts. The Whiff Co is all about the art of giving year round, with a focus on handcrafted goods and handmade goodies. They want to make creative, personal gift giving accessible to anyone, even if you aren't particularly crafty or creative... or maybe just don't have the time.

If you do have the time and want to try something new, making a cake in a jar is a great way to create a really personal gift. What better way to show you care than with a single serving treat in your loved one's favorite flavor?

I was convinced that the glass would break in the oven, but it didn't. Here's how to make a cake in a jar.

Mix Batter
Mix Batter

Make your batter. You can use any batter (we used a classic yellow cake and a black tea recipe) and since the jar is air-tight, the cake will keep for a few days so it's safe to mail.

Prep Jars
Prep Jars

Prep your jars. We recommend sterilizing via dishwasher, or if not possible with their dishwasher, then antibacterial soap. We used Kerr canning jars.

Pour Batter in Jar

Carefully put the cake batter in the jar, just about halfway. If you get it on the sides, wipe it off.

Put on baking sheet

Place the jars on a cookie sheet.

Put in Oven

Put the cooking sheet in the oven.

Bake in Oven

Bake as you normally would back the cake.

Make frosting. We used a honey butter cream recipe.

Frost the little cakes and enjoy! Or carefully place the lid on the jar and send off to your loved one!
